Gastric Balloon Versus Gastric Band

If you are looking forward to weight loss via gastric balloon or gastric band, but are confused about which procedure to choose, then read this article to understand the differences of gastric balloon versus gastric band.

                           Gastric Balloon Versus Gastric Band

Based on what they are:

Gastric Balloon (nonsurgical)

Gastric balloons are saline-filled- silicon balloons specially designed to place inside the stomach. The balloons occupy space in the stomach and control appetite, leading to weight loss.

Gastric Band

Gastric bands or lap bands are inflatable bands surgically placed around the stomach to “tie” it and create two stomach sections: One small pouch in the upper stomach and another remaining stomach.

Based on the placement method in the stomach

Gastric Balloon

Gastric balloon placement method depends on the type of gastric balloon. There are three types of balloons: Orbera, Spatz and Allurion Elipse balloon. The Orbera and Spatz balloons are placed endoscopically inside the stomach under sedation. The Spatz is an adjustable balloon which can be inflated and deflated later also. Once it reaches the stomach, it is inflated with saline water. The balloons remain inside the stomach for 6-12 months.

Elipse intragastric balloon is a small capsule swallowed by the patient, and its placement is invigilated with an X-ray. It has a thin tube attached to it. Once it is in the correct position, the balloon is inflated with sterile water. It has a self-deflating valve which automatically opens after 4-months of placement, and the balloon passes out in the stool. It needs no surgery or endoscopy for its placement or removal.

Gastric Band

The gastric band placement involves minimally invasive surgery. The surgery does not cut and remove the stomach; instead, it divides it into two parts, smaller and bigger. The smaller pouch opens into the stomach and helps control appetite, causing weight loss. Gastric bands are very helpful to obese patients with cardiac problems or any other major issues which necessarily need to lose weight.

Gastric band placement needs a little longer stay than gastric balloon insertion, which is a day-procedure with no hospital stay.

Based on how it helps with weight loss

Gastric Balloon

Gastric balloons inflate and occupy most of the stomach’s space. It restricts hunger, and therefore the person eats small portions of food. Eating less or calorie control leads to weight loss.

Gastric Band

The lap bap band ties the stomach reducing its internal cavity. Hence there is less space in the stomach, and the person feels lesser hungry. Reduced calorie intake leads to weight loss.

Other differences

  • The balloon inflates and occupies space internally.
  • Anybody above 27 BMI can be recommended this procedure. It can be recommended to those who dont want bariatric surgery or who are not fit for bariatric surgery.
  • It is a non-invasive procedure.
  • Spartz balloon is adjustable.
  • Fewer chances of failure.

  • It is a day procedure and does not require a hospital stay until and unless the case is complicated.
  • Gastric band ties around the stomach.

  • Patients with BMI above 30 with high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, gastric reflux, osteoarthritis or metabolic syndrome usually recommend gastric band procedures.
  • It requires minimally invasive surgery.
  • It is adjustable and reversible
  • A failed gastric band surgery might require gastric band removal.
  • It requires a longer hospital stay
